Fibromyalgia causes widespread pain and fatigue that can be exhausting to live with. Physiotherapy helps through gentle, gradual movement and pacing, working with your body rather than against it.

Talk to me about living with fibromyalgia

The basics

Managing fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a long-term condition involving widespread pain, fatigue, and often poor sleep and a sense of the body being oversensitive to pain signals. It is real, it is common, and it can be genuinely draining.

There is no quick fix, but the right approach helps. Gentle, gradually increased activity, paced carefully so it does not trigger flares, is one of the most effective tools, alongside education and strategies to manage energy and pain.

What to notice

Common symptoms

  • Widespread pain across the body
  • Ongoing fatigue and low energy
  • Poor or unrefreshing sleep
  • Stiffness, especially in the morning
  • Symptoms that flare with overactivity or stress
Why it happens

What is involved

  • Changes in how the body processes pain signals
  • Often triggered or worsened by stress or illness
  • Poor sleep feeding into pain and fatigue
  • Reduced activity leading to deconditioning
The treatment

How physiotherapy helps

The aim is to improve function and quality of life, not to push through pain. I help you find a sustainable level of activity and build very gradually from there.

Paced activity

Finding a sustainable baseline and building up gently to avoid flares.

Gentle exercise

Low-impact movement that improves fitness without overloading you.

Education

Understanding pain and fatigue so you can manage them better.

Self-management

Practical tools for energy, sleep habits, and flare-ups.

What to expect

Your recovery journey

Treatment moves through clear stages. I set the pace to suit you, but the path usually looks like this.

01

Assessment

I take time to understand your symptoms, activity, and goals.

02

Find a baseline

I set a manageable starting level that does not trigger flares.

03

Build gently

Gradual, paced increases in activity and fitness.

04

Self-manage

Tools and a routine to manage the condition long term.

In your sessions

What your sessions involve

  • Gentle low-impact aerobic activity
  • Graded strengthening at a manageable level
  • Stretching and relaxation techniques
  • Pacing and energy-management strategies

When to seek urgent care

See your doctor if you develop new focal weakness or numbness, unexplained weight loss, fever, or joint swelling, as these are not typical of fibromyalgia and should be checked.

Good to know

Questions I hear a lot

Will exercise make my pain worse?
Done gently and paced correctly, exercise usually helps rather than harms. The key is starting low and building slowly, which is exactly how I approach it with you.
Is this going to cure it?
There is no cure, but many people meaningfully improve their function, energy, and quality of life with the right paced approach and self-management tools.
What if I have a flare?
Flares are part of the condition. I help you plan for them and adjust activity so they are less frequent and easier to handle.
