Scoliosis is a sideways curve of the spine. Physiotherapy helps with posture, strength, movement, and comfort, and supports you alongside any monitoring or care from your specialist.

Talk to me about scoliosis

The basics

What is scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine, which can appear during growth, later in adulthood, or from other causes. Curves range from mild to more significant, and many are monitored rather than treated surgically.

Physiotherapy has an important supporting role. Targeted, curve-specific exercise, posture work, and strengthening help with muscle balance, movement, and comfort, and keep you active. I work alongside your specialist, who monitors the curve itself.

What to notice

Signs and symptoms

  • A visible sideways curve of the spine
  • Uneven shoulders, waist, or hips
  • One shoulder blade more prominent
  • Muscle tightness or aching around the curve
  • Fatigue holding certain positions
Why it happens

Common causes

  • Often no known cause (idiopathic)
  • Changes during growth spurts
  • Age-related changes in adults
  • Sometimes linked with other conditions
The treatment

How physiotherapy helps

I focus on what physiotherapy does well: posture, muscle balance, strength, and comfort, tailored to your curve and working alongside your specialist's monitoring.

Targeted exercise

Curve-specific and postural exercises to support muscle balance.

Strength and core

Building trunk and core strength that supports the spine.

Mobility and comfort

Movement and hands-on work to ease tightness and aching.

Posture and habits

Practical posture and activity advice for daily life.

What to expect

Your recovery journey

Treatment moves through clear stages. I set the pace to suit you, but the path usually looks like this.

01

Assessment

I assess your posture, movement, strength, and symptoms.

02

Plan

A tailored program alongside your specialist's monitoring.

03

Strengthen

Targeted exercise for balance, strength, and comfort.

04

Maintain

An ongoing routine to keep you strong and active.

In your sessions

Exercises I may use

  • Curve-specific postural exercises
  • Core and trunk strengthening
  • Spinal mobility within comfort
  • Breathing and posture awareness work

When to seek urgent care

See your doctor or specialist if a curve appears to be worsening quickly, if you develop leg weakness, numbness, or changes in bladder or bowel control, or if you have new breathing difficulty.

Good to know

Questions I hear a lot

Can exercise straighten my spine?
Physiotherapy does not straighten the curve itself, but it helps with muscle balance, strength, posture, and comfort, and keeps you active and confident.
Do I need a brace or surgery?
That depends on the curve and is decided by your specialist. Physiotherapy supports you whatever path is chosen, including around bracing or surgery.
Is exercise safe with scoliosis?
Yes, with the right guidance. I tailor the program to your curve and build it gradually.
