Basic Pain Management

Cervical spondylosis is age-related wear in the neck. It is very common and often causes no problems, but when it brings stiffness or pain, physiotherapy can manage it well.

Talk to me about cervical spondylosis

The basics

What is cervical spondylosis?

Cervical spondylosis describes the normal wear-and-tear changes in the discs and joints of the neck that come with age. Most people over a certain age have some of it, often without any symptoms.

When it does cause trouble, it usually shows up as neck stiffness and aching. Less often it can irritate a nearby nerve and cause symptoms into the arm. Treatment focuses on keeping the neck mobile, strong, and comfortable.

What to notice

Common symptoms

  • Neck stiffness, often worse in the morning
  • A grinding or clicking sensation when moving the neck
  • An ache that spreads to the shoulders or base of the skull
  • Headaches linked to neck tension
  • Occasionally pins and needles into the arm
Why it happens

Common causes

  • Natural age-related changes in discs and joints
  • Years of posture and screen habits adding load
  • Reduced neck movement and muscle strength
  • Previous neck injuries
The treatment

How physiotherapy helps

I keep the neck moving and strong, ease the day-to-day stiffness, and give you tools to manage flare-ups yourself.

Mobility work

Hands-on and active techniques to reduce stiffness and keep the neck moving.

Strengthening

Building the deep neck and upper back muscles that support the spine.

Posture and habits

Adjusting screen and desk setups that add strain through the day.

Self-management

A simple routine so you can handle flare-ups confidently at home.

What to expect

Your recovery journey

Treatment moves through clear stages. I set the pace to suit you, but the path usually looks like this.

01

Assessment

I check movement, strength, and whether any nerve symptoms are present.

02

Ease stiffness

Hands-on treatment and mobility to settle the neck.

03

Strengthen

A routine to support the neck and reduce recurrences.

04

Self-manage

You leave with the tools to keep symptoms in check.

In your sessions

Exercises I may use

  • Chin tucks for deep neck support
  • Neck range-of-movement work within comfort
  • Shoulder blade and upper back strengthening
  • Postural awareness drills for desk work

When to seek urgent care

Seek prompt medical assessment if you develop weakness or clumsiness in the hands, problems with balance or walking, or any changes in bladder or bowel control, as these need checking without delay.

Good to know

Questions I hear a lot

Does the wear-and-tear mean my neck is damaged?
No. These changes are a normal part of ageing, like grey hair, and are present in many people with no pain at all. Symptoms can usually be managed well.
Will it keep getting worse?
Not necessarily. Many people keep it well controlled for years with the right exercise and habits.
Is exercise safe?
Yes, and it is one of the best things for it. I start at the right level and build gradually.
