Basic Pain Management

An ankle sprain is one of the most common injuries there is. Most heal well, but the ones that are rushed tend to come back, which is exactly what good rehabilitation prevents.

Talk to me about an ankle sprain

The basics

What is an ankle sprain?

A sprain is a stretch or tear of the ligaments that support the ankle, usually from rolling or twisting it. It can range from mild to more significant, with swelling, bruising, and pain to match.

The mistake many people make is stopping too early once the pain settles. Without rebuilding strength and balance, the ankle stays vulnerable, which is why so many sprains recur. Proper rehab closes that gap.

What to notice

Common symptoms

  • Pain and swelling around the ankle
  • Bruising in the days after the injury
  • Difficulty or pain putting weight on it
  • Stiffness and reduced movement
  • A feeling of instability or giving way
Why it happens

Common causes

  • Rolling or twisting the ankle
  • Sport, running, or jumping on uneven ground
  • Missing a step or a kerb
  • Weak or previously injured ankles
  • Footwear with poor support
The treatment

How physiotherapy helps

Early on I protect and settle the ankle, then rebuild the strength, movement, and balance it needs so it does not keep letting you down.

Early management

Guidance on swelling, movement, and weight-bearing in the first days.

Restore movement

Hands-on and active work to recover ankle range and ease stiffness.

Strength and balance

Rebuilding the muscles and balance control that stabilise the ankle.

Return to sport

A graded plan back to running, sport, and daily activity.

What to expect

Your recovery journey

Treatment moves through clear stages. I set the pace to suit you, but the path usually looks like this.

01

Assessment

I grade the sprain and check what movement is safe.

02

Protect and settle

Manage swelling and pain in the early phase.

03

Rebuild

Strength, movement, and balance work as it heals.

04

Return

Graded return to sport and confident movement.

In your sessions

Exercises I may use

  • Ankle range-of-movement work
  • Calf and ankle strengthening
  • Single-leg balance and control drills
  • Hopping and agility work before return to sport

When to seek urgent care

Seek medical assessment if you cannot put any weight on the ankle, there is severe pain over the bones, an obvious deformity, or numbness, as a fracture may need to be ruled out.

Good to know

Questions I hear a lot

Can I walk on a sprained ankle?
Gentle, protected movement is usually encouraged once a fracture is ruled out. I will guide how much is safe as it settles.
Why do my ankles keep rolling?
Usually because the strength and balance were never fully rebuilt after a previous sprain. A proper program addresses that and reduces recurrence.
When can I get back to sport?
When the ankle has the strength, control, and confidence to handle it. I use clear milestones so the return is timed, not guessed.
